A Beginner's Triathlon Gear Checklist
You need less than you think to finish your first race.
Triathlon looks gear-heavy, but a first-timer can start with the basics and add specialised kit later. Borrow before you buy where you can.
The short list
You need less than you think to finish your first race.
A tri-suit you can swim, ride, and run in; goggles; a roadworthy bike and helmet; and running shoes you trust. Everything else — aero bars, race wheels, fancy nutrition — is optional at first.
Practise transitions at home. Saving two minutes there is cheaper than any upgrade.
The quick version
- A tri-suit, goggles, a safe bike, and shoes get you started.
- Borrow specialist kit before you buy it.
- Practise transitions — it's free speed.
